Zone Conference of the Ages

Hey Y'all!

This past week has been really great and full of Christmas fun! On Thursday we had our Christmas Zone Conference which was AMAZING. The first half was spent talking about the power of the Book of Mormon and how we can use it better in our work. The Spirit was so strong as people bore their testimonies of how it has changed their lives. Then after lunch we got to play games and watch Christmas movies! President said that we needed to relax a little bit so we all just hung out for a while and Sister Mikesell and I spent most of the time playing cards with another group of missionaries. We also played Heads up 7 up as a Zone:) It was a well needed break from the grind of missionary work and everyone had a ton of fun! We finished out Zone Conference by bringing the reverence back in and talking about Christ and the Sacrament. That really is the reason we celebrate Christmas and being on my mission during this season has helped me really ponder everything that Christ has done for us.

That night we had our ward Christmas Party. It was really nicely done and a lot of people showed up. We even had a young girl who had been taught by missionaries in the past come up to us and ask if we could teach her again! We got our pictures taken with Santa and got a lot of leftover to take home:)

Earlier in the week we went to visit a family and they are really big into hunting (Like everyone else here) and they had a freezer full of deer steaks. They asked us if we wanted any because they had too much but we declined because we didn't know how to cook it. They insisted we take some and even showed us exactly how to fry it up so we went home and made some really good deer soft tacos!

We are really excited for this next week because a senior couple is coming to Elkins! They are going to be such a great help and I know the work they do will help bring even more people to Christ. Their names are the Bay's and they're from Florida.

I hope y'all are having a great Christmas season and remember the real reason we celebrate!

    I love you all!

I had a baby!!

Hi Y'all!

This week has brought a lot of change! It was Sister Van Tassell's last week of the mission and on Monday President Lindhardt called and ask if I would be a trainer for a new missionary coming in on Friday. It was a hectic week as I helped Sister Van Tassell pack for home and as I got ready to welcome the new Sister.

On Thursday we had District Meeting in Philippi and held a funeral for Sister Van Tassell (pics to come soon). It was our last District Meeting as a district as half of us were leaving and the other half are now trainers. On the way back to Elkins we decided to try a little restaurant that the Philippi Elders suggested and put it in the GPS and headed on our way. About halfway there the GPS told us to turn down this narrow dirt road. We thought it would just be a short little road so we listened and turned down it. It turns out that it was over a mile long with lots of little hills and pure mud that our tires sunk into. Needless to say when we finally hit solid ground again our truck was covered in mud and we had to wash it before our next appointment. But we did find the restaurant and it was delicious:)

Friday was transfers in Charleston and I got to see the Haupt family from Teay's Valley which was a great surprise! They were saying goodbye to Sister Condie who also flew home on Saturday. It was so sad saying goodbye to my two companions but I know they're gonna do great things back home! And then I got my new baby!!!! Her name is Sister Mikesell, ("Like Mike sells seashells on the sea shore") and she's from Caldwell, ID (Yes, I got ANOTHER Idaho companion). Sister Mikesell is amazing!! I was a little nervous about training because I still don't know everything myself but she makes it so much easier! She loves to learn and improve and picks everything up so fast! She's definitely a better trainee than I was. She's already teaching so powerfully and just knows how to draw the spirit in with ease. I'm so excited for what she's going to accomplish in this area and in her mission and am so glad I get to be her mom!

Sis Mikesell and I after we made our apartment a little more festive:)

I have been learning a TON as a trainer. Not only because I have to teach everything so I really have to know it myself first but also because Sis Mikesell has brought so many great new ideas with her. I know I was asked to be a trainer so I could grow just as much as her, if not more. I love how Heavenly Father puts us in positions that we need to be in so that we can continuously improve.

I love all of you and pray that you have a great week and Christmas Season!

Fresh Bear and President Lindhardt

Hi Y'all!

This week went by faster than last week which I didn't think was possible. I think part of the reason is because Sis Van Tassell goes home on Saturday and that makes time seem like it's flying. We had a great Thanksgiving with the Mallow and the Currence families. Luckily we were smart enough to limit ourselves to two meal appointments so we didn't explode with food. Even just the two was almost too much for my stomach to handle. But it was sooo good. It was all basically the same as what I'd usually have for Thanksgiving at home which was nice.

Fresh Bear (not a huge fan, interesting aftertaste)

Bro Currence  who killed the bear on the right and Emery who cooked it on the left :)

On Monday President Lindhardt called us and asked if we could have our interviews with him that day instead of when they were originally planned for on Tuesday in Buckhannon. We said sure and decided that since our washing machine was broken we would head to Buckhannon early to use the washing machine in the Buckhannon Sister's apartment and make them dinner. So we drove out there (about 45 minutes away), did our laundry and were about to get to the Buckhannon chapel when we get a call from President telling us that he's waiting for us at the Elkins building. We both had a mini heart attack and were trying to figure out what to say for a good while and then finally (like a minute later) he asked if we wanted to just meet at the Buckhannon building and if our clothes were done. He had been in Buckhannon the whole time and just wanted to make us freak out. And that's basically the type of person President Lindhardt is. I don't think I've ever heard him say anything without making a joke first.

Mapping out how everyone in our Ward is related

Eating at El Gran Sabor, a super popular Venezuelan restaurant in downtown Elkins, probably some of the best food I've ever had.

I had a very spiritual experience in the regards to the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon happen this week. Sister Van Tassell and I were practicing introducing it to people and I had the feeling to turn to 3 Nephi 11 (when Christ visits the Americas) and read where Christ introduces himself to them. I started to read and immediately I felt this overwhelming power come upon me. I tried to read the verse but tears were coming to my eyes and I could barely see. It caught me so off guard and I think that's how the Spirit works a lot of the time. You get answers and reassurances when you least expect them. I'm so thankful for that experience because it is just another thing to add to my testimony of the Savior and the Book of Mormon. There is no other way to explain what happened than the Spirit testifying to me that it's all true.

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and have a great week!

Elder Foster's Mission Tour

Hi Y'all!

This week was probably the fastest week on my mission. I swear I blinked and it was Monday again. I hope that means we were working hard! The highlight of it was Elder Foster of the 70 coming for a mission tour on Friday! We traveled down to Charleston on Thursday night with the Buckhannon Sisters and stayed with the South Hills Sisters and all the other Sisters in the Clarksburg and Morgantown Zones. It was such a fun night and we got to know each other better and just relax a little.

 Slumber party in Charleston:)

Then in the morning we all went to the Charleston Stake Center for the meeting with Elder Foster. It was so full of insight and amazing ideas on how we can become better missionaries and work with the members to advance the mission. I also got to see Sister Condie and other Sisters I had left from the Charleston zone! I loved getting to hear how everyone in Teay's Valley is doing and a little update on the guy who proposed to me a while ago: He's on date to get baptized! Miracles do happen:)

Mommy <3

We also figured out that Walmart is the place to be on Tuesday afternoons. We had to stop in a get Sister Van Tassell a watch during our lunch break and we saw EVERYONE. There were members and people we knew EVERYWHERE. Maybe that's where we should start looking for people to teach haha

Bull onesies! Walmart for only $5. The hit of the slumberparty #CompUnity

We just started teaching a young family yesterday and I love them already.Their names are Alexis and Brennen (not to be confused with my Sister and Brother-in-law Alex and Brennen) and have a super strong faith in Christ and read the Bible and pray together as a family every night. Brennen was engaged to a member of the church about 13 years ago and she'd introduced him to everything but at the time he didn't feel like it was for him. But he invited us to come back every week for the next couple months and try to sway him otherwise. He is very concerned with his families "souls" and wants to make sure he's doing what's right for them. He also said that if he finds out this is true he'll be the strongest Latter-day Saint ever. We have a big task ahead of us but I know that we just have to help him feel the Spirit and Heavenly Father will take care of the rest. "Angles are continuously preparing the hearts of men".

I hope y'all have a great Thanksgiving and know that you're all in my prayers,

John Got Baptized!

Hey Ya'll!

John, the amazingly prepared guy Sister Condie and I taught in Teay's Valley, got baptized last week! I was really disappointed I couldn't attend the baptism because I'm too far away but it still went great and I'm so excited for him!

Deer Jerky we got from a member we visited

This week our ward mission leader, Bro Richards, left for his mission in Pennsylvania! He'll be there for 3 months and then be reassigned somewhere else in the world. He is truly an example of how the gospel can change you as he was only baptized a little over a year ago.

We also had a really interesting experience in a cemetery earlier this week. We went down a road that didn't have a place to turn around but there was a cemetery right next to it so we pulled in hoping to turn around on a space that was lined with straw and looked like cars usually parked on it. Well... it had been raining pretty hard and as soon as we pulled up onto it our tires sank into the straw and it turned out to be just a big mud pit. We tried to move but the tires were just spinning in the mud. Sister Van Tassell got out of the car to push and I hopped into the driver's seat. For like 5 minutes we struggled trying to get out of the mud until we remembered that we had 4-wheel drive.. That luckily got us out of it, hopefully not too many people saw us struggling.

Sis V.T. and I matched again on accident

I love being out here and being a missionary! There are so many adventures I'll never forget and so many people I'll never forget. This gospel changes lives and I'm so glad I get to watch that happen!

Have a great week y'all! I love you!

Families Can Be Together Forever

Hi Y'all,
This week I have learned so much. We had Zone Conference in Clarksburg on Thursday and then immediately after Sister Van Tassell and I went on Exchanges with Sister's Andersen and Wykstra. Sister Wyksta and I didn't get much teaching done but I learned more from this exchange than I ever thought possible. Sister Wyksta's mom passed away unexpectedly on Tuseday, two days before the exchange. We spent a lot of our time together talking with her dad on the phone and Skyping her family to make sure everything worked for when she Skyped in during the Funeral on Saturday. Through all of this I was amazed by the strength of Sister Wyksta and her entire family. Not once did she think about going home. Not once did she say anything negative. She knew that being out here on her mission is exactly where she needs to be. She told me that when she found out her mom had passed away she was studying and looked out the window and just saw all the people who didn't have the knowledge that families can be eternal and had the desire more than ever to share that with them. I am so glad I got the opportunity to be on this exchange with her because I got to see her family come together and talk about all the great memories they had with their mom. I got to see their strong testimonies as they talked about her being around them and how she is working hard in the Spirit World. There was sadness yes, but there was also faith and hope that they were all going to see her again soon. I got the opportunity to teach the lesson on the Plan of Salvation with them over Skype and the Spirit was the strongest I've felt it in a lesson as they shared what it all meant to them. I won't forget those 24 hours I spent with Sister Wykstra for a very, very, long time.
Grafton, WV where Mother's Day began (they also had a super creepy statue of "Mother"...)

So for the last couple weeks Sister Van Tassell and I have forgotten to put out our trash... and during the first week I was here we emptied the freezer of meat that had been in there for a really long time. We had put it in the garage and within a couple days realized that it smelt horrible so we set it outside our apartment. Two weeks goes by and it smells absolutely rancid. So we finally remembered to put out our trash last night and tried to lift the bag of rotting meat into another bag, trying not to breath in the toxic fumes. As Sister Van Tassell lifted the bag it ripped and maggots and rotten meat got all over her hands. I almost threw up everywhere. We had to push through and finally got the meat into another bag. We had an appointment immediately after that and quickly ran inside and tried to wash the smell from our hands. It sorta worked but for the rest of the night we had to coat our hands in hand sanitizer to keep them from smelling.
On our way to district meeting in Buckhannon

The rest of the week went well and we had a good time. Elder Foster of the Seventy is going to be coming to our Mission in a couple weeks so we're going to have to make a trip down to Charleston to meet with him! That should be a great experience to look forward to.
I hope y'all are doing great and that this next week is amazing!
I love you!

We Moved!

Hey Y'all!
This week definitely started off slow and seemed like no one was ever home or didn't want to talk to us. It was really frustrating and my patience was definitely tested. We kept pushing through and finally, on Sunday, we got our miracles! We visited a member who hasn't been to church for a very long time and by the end of our lesson she asked us to text her next Sunday to make sure she was up for church and she told us not to give up on her! I know the Lord was guiding us through that lesson because we didn't follow the plan we had made at all. Then we went and visited someone the missionaries met with only a couple times before and that we've been trying to contact but has never been home. We finally were able to see her and taught her fiancé too and they both are on date to be baptized now! They are so awesome and have such pure intentions!

Ok so we have THE NICEST apartment in the entire mission. We have walk in closets, our own bathrooms, and it's so nice we're not allowed to wear shoes in it. We even have our own garage which is going to make this winter so great with our truck considering it has already started snowing:) But despite all this we are temporarily relocated into an old senior couple missionaries house because the heater broke! The temp quickly dropped to the 50's and the repair man said it wouldn't get fixed until later this week so we packed up and moved! This house is still pretty nice so I have no complaints:)

When you have to wear gloves and a hat to plan, it's time to move
Where we're now staying

Also, something really funny about my companion is that she loves Mexicans haha. All of her friends back home were Mexicans and I think she might be more cultured than I am. Her greatest dream in
life is to become one. I promised her I'd take her to Mexico when I get off my mission lol.

Fun times in the Rain!

Something else that I learned this week was that if we want something, we have to be willing to work for it. We can't just pray for something and then hope it's going to happen. We have to do all that we can ourselves and then Heavenly Father will step in and help us. I seemed to get that message in every passage of scripture that I read: Enos 1:12, Alma 32:43, WoM 1:18. I think Heavenly Father needed me to understand that message this week.

I hope that you all have a great week and have a great Halloween!!

ELKINS and SIS VAN TASSELL

Hey Y'all!
These past few days have brought a lot of change! I absolutely LOVE Elkins! It is a super cute small town with beautiful country hills all around it and this time of year it's especially beautiful with all the trees changing color. The people here are the definition of redneck and I've already eaten deer jerky and a family we teach is going to make us Squirrel gravy!!! It's a very different atmosphere than Teay's Valley was but I love it already! We have a small ward with only about 50 active members and we've already been asked to give talks next Sunday :)

I also have to take a paragraph to tell you about how AMAZING my new companion is! Sister Van Tassell is such a great missionary and I already know I'm going to learn so much from her. She is the kindest most fun loving person I have ever met and is always full of energy. She's from Paul, Idaho, right next to where Sister Condie was from. Good thing I can still use all my potato jokes:) This is her last transfer in the mission so I'll be killing her off soon unfortunately :( She is such a hard worker and I know that we'll work wonders with the help of God in this area!

Sister Van Tassell

We teach two AWESOME young families. One is the Mallows. The mom just got baptized in August and the dad is still learning more. We asked him in my first lesson there what's holding him back and he said he just hadn't prayed about it because he didn't have the time. We committed him to do so before our next appointment and Bro Richards (our ward mission leader who is leaving for his mission in a couple weeks and was baptized a year ago) bore his testimony about receiving answers to prayers and the Spirit was SOOO strong. At the end of the lesson we asked Bro Mallow who he wanted to say the closing prayer and he said that he would say it! Sister Mallow was shocked because that was apparently the first time he's volunteered to do it himself! I'm super excited to come back and continue teaching him.
Diamond, a stray with such cool eyes!
Diamond likes to be our walking buddy.

The second family we teach is the Currences. They are super into hunting and are related to everyone within like a 5 mile radius of them. They're on date to be baptized in November and are super solid! Every prayer they have in our their knees as a fa

mily, whether it's the opening prayer or a prayer over the food.

Justin: "I work at this Mexican Restaurant and it's really good! You guys should go there!"

Me: "Is it like authentic Mexican food or Americanized Mexican food?"

Sister Currence: "If by authentic you mean they cook it in the restaurant then Yeah!" (She was 100% serious)

Everybody: "Oh! Do you speak Spanish"

Me: "No"

Them "oh...."

Something else I learned this week: When Sister Van Tassell says she's going to knock walnuts out of a tree, stand far far away. Otherwise you'll get pelted with falling walnuts.

That's all for this week! I hope everyone has a great week and I love all of you!

I'm Getting Transferred!

Exchanges:) Sister Condie, Me, Sister Schoemig, Sister Coombs, Sister Paulson

Hey Y'all!
I'm getting transferred to Elkins, West Virginia to be with Sister Van Tassell! So far what people have told me is that Elkins is a small town in the mountains and it's GORGEOUS! I'm excited to go meet new people and have a change of scenery but I'm going to miss Teay's Valley SOOO much. There is so much happening here now and I'm so sad I'm going to miss John and Amelia's baptisms in the upcoming weeks and hopefully Eddie and the other John's. I've come to love everyone we teach and the members that it will be hard to leave.

Me and Amelia! She's getting baptized on Nov. 11th!!

This past week and a half has been packed with teaching and other things. Last Tuesday we had exchanges with the South Charleston Sisters. I went out with Sister Paulson and had such a great time! I LOVED being with the other Sisters for a day, we were nonstop laughing the whole time. A girl who just got back from her mission in France came with Sister Paulson and I to see a couple people. One of them was an elderly man named Jim who I will never forget. He welcomes us at his doorstep and we talk a little bit. Then he asks us if we want a Christmas CD and we say sure, why not. So he let's us into his house and it is COVERED in THOUSANDS of CD's. Apparently he has like devoted his life to burning CD's so that he can share music with people. So he goes over to one shelf and gives each of us a CD and then goes to another and gives us all two more. Then he tells us to follow him and he plays a CD and it's a voice recording of him saying things he's learned in life. Like "You can either be squirrel food or the seed of a mighty oak, it depends on where you plant yourself" and a whole bunch of other phrases. We had to fight hard to not laugh. He was such a kind man and I would visit him all the time if I lived here. And I got some nice things to listen to during Christmas time :)
Sister Condie owed me Cold Stone because she bet me I couldn't go a whole day without our car monitor telling me to slow down lol (it's very sensitive

On Friday we helped a member we teach move. We hit the jackpot there as she was getting rid of A TON of her old clothes and we got first dibs:) I basically have a new closet.
Every time we teach John I am amazed at how prepared he is. We taught him the Word of Wisdom and he doesn't have a problem with a single thing! That's unheard of in West Virginia! And he asked us about tithing and how he could pay it BEFORE we ever mentioned it. This guy is going to be sooo strong in the gospel. Thankfully Sister Condie can send me pictures of his baptism :)

Bro Schmith! Every missionary's grandpa away from home, he joined the church about 3 years ago:)

Well, not a lot happened this week other than teaching and finding. Teay's Valley is doing so well and I'm really going to be sad to leave it. I will miss Sister Condie so much and am so glad I got her as a trainer because I learned from her everyday. We were shocked when we got the call I was leaving because President kept telling us how much he liked us together. I know I'm needed somewhere else though and can't wait to figure out why that is!
I love you all and hope this week is great!

Exploring Charleston

A picture from Sister Schempp!
Hey Y'all!

I hope everyone's week has been great:) We had a pretty good week here in Teay's Valley for not being in Teay's Valley as much as we would have liked. First, we had interviews with President Lindhardt at the mission office in Charleston which was so great! He gave me good tips on how I can study so I can keep improving in my missionary work! I love him so much and know that part of the reason I came to West Virginia was so that I could have him as my mission president.
Charleston

A house built by the governor in the 1930's

On Friday we had to travel to Montgomery for District Meeting in the Furniture store again. I can't tell you enough how much I love the other 6 missionaries in our District! Sister Condie and I made Pumpkin Gingerbread for it that was a lot harder to make here than in Washington! I have to learn how to bake all over again but it still turned out good. Then we went to Charleston to get an oil change and to get our car looked at because it was making a weird noise when we turned right.  They said it would take a couple hours to complete so one of Sister Condie's old Ward Mission Leaders and his wife gave us a tour of Charleston. We went to different view points and visited some really cool old houses. I love the old architecture and how much history the city has. It's SOO pretty!  We got back to the car place and they still hadn't figured out what was wrong with it so we had to wait even longer. In total we had to wait almost 4 hours. And then they told us a strut was broken so we have to go back on Wednesday so they can fix it and they said that will take about 5 hours! Because it's out of our area all we can do is plan during that time.
Our neighbors, Bill and Louis. They had taken us out to lunch that day.

John, the awesome guy we found last week, came to church yesterday! He was so excited to come and there was a kid's baptism after church so we asked him if he wanted to stay for it. He told us that he couldn't because he'd have to have a blow dryer to dry off a medical thing he has when he gets baptized. We just laughed and told him that he wouldn't be getting baptized that day, just the kid. I'm so excited to see John become a part of this ward family!
My GORGEOUS companion!

Ok, another story about people being put in our path. So, earlier this week we were on our way to see a less-active member that we hadn't met before. As we were walking down the street we saw two ladies who were talking outside their house and one of them had a dog on a leash. As we walked past them the dog started going crazy and pulling one of the ladies towards us. She was finally able to yank the dog inside and turned to say sorry to us. They looked a lot like twins and so Sister Condie asked them if they were sister and we just had a brief conversation with them. They were sisters and one of them asked us what we were. We told them that we are missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. "Mormons!" one of them shouted. She then went on to explain that she had done a ton of research about Mormons and thought we were the coolest people ever! She had watched videos about missionaries, she knew about the welfare programs we have, and loved how much the church is focused around families. She even said that whenever she's not feeling great she'll google "Mormon Beliefs" just to be uplifted. Talk about being prepared. And she told us that Elders had knocked on her door right before she moved from Tennessee and talked to her a bit. She is so excited to have us come back and teach her more and really wants to come to church! She said that her only set back she has right now is that she smokes but she can work on it.

The Lord really does work miracles. I have seen them occur with so many people as they put their trust in him. I love it here and wish you all a happy and successful week!

I love you all!

General Conference

Hey Ya'll!

This weekend was so uplifting with conference! For those of you unfamiliar with General Conference, every 6 months we get to hear from the Lord's Prophet, Apostles, and other general authorities! It is amazing how personal each message is even though it's given to the entire world. I especially loved how President Uchtdorf open the Conference by sharing how by living the gospel our life will be better and God will use us to make the lives of others better. And then how Sister Oscarson followed that by reminding us that we need to lose ourselves in the service of others and that we shouldn't focus on what we can get out of church and other activities but instead ask ourselves, "Who needs me today?" I'm excited to get the written version of the talks soon and study them even more!

You know how we're told that people are constantly being prepared to hear the message of the restored gospel? Well, this week we found someone who has been preparing to receive it for the past five years and is now on date to be baptized next month! It was amazing how the Lord has had a hand in his preparation. John had cancer and almost died five years ago and since then has been trying to learn more about and get closer to God. He has been searching for a church but each one he went to just seemed like it was missing something. The day we found him we had knocked on all his neighbors doors but moved on without knocking on his. Then later that night we were walking back to our truck and had the feeling to go back and knock on his door. He answered and was so excited to meet with us again! He later told us that he had gotten home only shortly before that and so if we would have knocked on his door when we were there earlier we wouldn't have met him. I know that the Lord was guiding us that day and made sure that we were sent to him when he needed us. As Elder Rasband said in Conference, "Everyting is by divine design". There is no such thing as coincidence. John loved Joseph Smith's testimony and has been reading the Book of Mormon since!

On Thursday we went and had lunch with Sister Schempp. She is awesome and has recently started to get into photography and the violin. She let Sister Condie play around on her violin and asked if she could take a few pictures of me to practice. I, of course, agreed and did a little mini photoshoot before we had to get back to work. We then arranged for us to come back today so that she could practice some more and we could get our pictures taken! Being a model is hard! I have a new respect for them! It was so much fun though and I'm excited to see how the pictures turn out.

Before conference on Sunday we taught our other John who is preparing for baptism next month the Word of Wisdom. He has been chewing tobacco for over 40 years and I was amazed at how much faith he had that he was willing to try and give it up for the Lord. We promised him that as he did so and relied on the Savior that he could do it and he would see the blessings come into his life. I'm so excited for what lays in store for him as he continues to keep the commitments we leave him!

I love this gospel so much and know how much it can change a person's life!

I love you all and hope everyone has a great week!
